When at the Old Market historical district in Omaha (cobblestone streets, vintage buildings, etc.), there are several good spots within a compact area – one of them being Vivace which of all things is an Italian place (you’d think I’d be sick of Italian fare by now). Stopping in Omaha on the way to northwestern Iowa was a good idea.

I chose Gorgonzola Cream pappardelle (thick noodles) pasta with tossed crimini mushrooms, red onions (the sweet and flavorful kind), roasted red peppers and spicy Italian sausage. The portion size was huge and I expected mediocrity – but what a surprise. The flavors blended well together with an overall Gorgonzola hint – not too strong as this champion of cheeses can be (don’t know if they used the real thing or a lesser substitute – the real stuff is hard to find except at Binny’s in Chicago). A very well prepared Caeser salad was the starter, along with thin garlic bread slices with a tomato and corn relish.

No time for dessert or coffee, but I did enjoy a very nice vin nobile Montepulciano glass of wine with lunch. The wine list is comprehensive with many good Italian wines by the glass; the stately Barolos and Barberescos and Montalcinos are only offered by the bottle – maybe next time if I’m staying overnight.
