Another new spot in Evanston, this one in an updated site which used to be a family owned bakery. Three Italian guys open a place with Nino the chef from, I believe, Sardinia. My visits to Sardinia were filled with wonderful food, seafood in fact, before my allergies got the best of me and I had to leave the ocean food scene. Back to the trattoria.

Fresh handmade minestrone began the dinner – what a delight. Plenty of fresh vegetables, no superflous anything, and served hot. Bravo. Wine choices by the glass limited but interesting; pours fair but not generous. Then the magnificent spaghetti alla carbonara – al dente pasta, a rich sauce (but not creamy – Nino uses eggs instead), and real good pancetta. Portion size just right for a big guy like me, but not ridiculous.

I will return.

Another Italian choice in Evanston – this one beautiful to behold.

Appetizers are varied, and they do asparagus right. This classy place split our lunch pasta entry in the kitchen – always a sign of good service. Wine choices by the glass are fair pours.

Calling all vegetarians, calling all vegans, calling anyone looking for healthy and tasty food: go to this place.

OK, so I don’t make it a habit of eating healthy, but why not once in a while.

My single entree choice was the roasted vegetable burrito with NO MEAT PRODUCTS, and it was extremely satisfying. Maybe it’s time to resurrect my hippie clothes. My guest had the tostada (with brown rice – the healthy kind) along with pumpkin cheesecake. We both had a glass of red wine and the total bill was $38 including tip.
